Student Union Election Campaigns

As many of you know I recently ran for the position of Student Union President in DkIT and was unsuccessful. There were four candidates in the election, three lads and myself. There were some issues raised about the moral use of tactics. There is nothing in the constitution to monitor election campaigns, so I pose this question to you all....

Should there be a separate list of rules and regulations drawn up to monitor how election campaigns are run?

Personally I think the following restrictions should be put in place:
  • A cap on the amount spent on a campaign
  • The number of posters used should be limited
  • Any members of a campaign team should be a student in the college themselves
  • No support or preference should be shown to any one candidate by the existing students union
I would love your feedback on this as I would like to pass this information onto the returning officer, Mr. Seamus Bellew.
