Should there be a separate list of rules and regulations drawn up to monitor how election campaigns are run?
Personally I think the following restrictions should be put in place:
Personally I think the following restrictions should be put in place:
- A cap on the amount spent on a campaign
- The number of posters used should be limited
- Any members of a campaign team should be a student in the college themselves
- No support or preference should be shown to any one candidate by the existing students union

1) Yeah i ilke A cap on the amount spent on a campaign so anybody that runs will have a fair chance , running against James would be impossible this year. but caps would probably be impossible to police.
2) The number of posters used should be limited, also agree.
3)Any members of a campaign team should be a student in the college themselves- well people had their friends help them that are not in the college but i cant see how its an advantage really and would be impossible to stop. Not really a major concern.
4) No support or preference should be shown to any one candidate by the existing students union - well although they shouldnt they're probably friends with the candidates. I didnt see this in this campaign maybe a few examples.
Hi Barry,
Thanks for the reply. You're probably right about the external people helping out with campaigns.
As for the cap, it would be relatively easy to police if we got all posters distributed by the union and maybe receipts have to be passed through the union when paid.
With the preference/support from the existing union it was seen quite a bit throughout the week unfortunately. In fact students have agreed to come forward and say that certain members of the union went around with candidates saying vote Mr. X number one. I understand they may be friends but they also have to realise the immense influence they have on the student body. Most students who don't know the candidates personally wouldn't know who to vote for and if the existing union are supporting one particular person well then the majority will also.
The use of the union office as a camp ground for one particular candidate was also an unfair advantage. I just don't think it should be allowed from now on.
I've already accepted that I won't be president but it doesn't mean I will forget about the union and all it’s done for me the last three/four years. I want whoever is in office to succeed for the welfare of the students, to continue the fight that has been going strong and this won't happen with candidates selected based on popularity, the amount of freebies they give away or the amount of money spent.
Hope this answers your questions
Lisa
